Create a Custom Laundry Room Using Stock Cabinets

One of the latest trends in home design is the creation of customized laundry rooms. With today's emphasis on customized spaces, there are a lot of companies that are cashing in by claiming to sell customized solutions specifically for the laundry room or garage. While they may call them custom, there really isn't anything custom about the cabinets. Similar to custom garage solutions, they are usually made out of particle board or flake board with a white veneer, which is exactly what you would buy if you were shopping at Home Depot or Lowes. The high prices are based on the concept that you buying them specifically for that space.

If you are planning on building a custom laundry room, you might want to think about using stock kitchen cabinets for the space. Kitchen cabinets are going to have the same features and functionality that you would get from these "custom laundry room cabinets, but you will be paying half the price. These cabinets usually feature higher quality materials, such as solid wood face frames and doors, and will usually have solid plywood sides as well. Rather than paying a company that specializes in custom units, consider buying these cabinets and installing them yourself.

LOWES

While stock kitchen cabinets can usually be found at your local home supply store, you can usually find some pretty good deals on-line as well. Recently, there has been a flood of companies importing stock cabinets and selling them on the internet. So rather than paying a premium for so-called "custom" cabinets that are designed specifically for your laundry room or garage, trying using kitchen cabinets. Not only will you get a durable product, but you can also coordinate the look of your house by having the same cabinets throughout.

Where DIYers Shop - Where They Buy - Home Depot, Lowe's Or Menards

As of the writing of this article, the trends are significant when do-it-yourself consumers tell us where they shop and where they actually make their purchases especially for larger ticket items relative to Home Depot, Lowes and Menards.

lowes

Menards, a family owned Midwest chain of Big Box stores, continues to have the highest ratio of those consumers who indicate they not only shop the store, but also actually purchase the items they shopped for.

LOWES

When the other two giants in Big Box building materials retail, with more of a nationwide presence, customers are studied, it is clear Lowe's is the place shopped and Home Depot is the purchase venue.

These trends were first uncovered about 8 years ago, and seem to be holding in the same trend more recently.

There could be a number of reasons for the indicators, but presented are a glimpse of this author's newer on-site, in-store observations. Actual product estimate acquisition and shops were conducted for this process in the departments listed. All opinions expressed are those solely of this researcher and not statistically relevant, since not every location of each retailer was shopped. But, in this researcher's opinion, the shops further solidified the quantitative, statistically relevant trends gathered in previous studies. Shops were conducted from coast to coast over the past 9 months.

1) The level of in-store customer service is higher in many visited Lowe's locations than in the same visited city Home Depot locations. When visiting those cities with all 3 retailers, including Menards, the people employed by Menards, especially in lumber and other building materials used in construction, were easier to find, more helpful and easier to ask questions of than both Home Depot and Lowe's. Wait times for help in this category were more favorable at Menards. Technical questions were answered more times correctly at Menards, then Lowe's, then Home Depot in the structural building materials category of goods.

2) Merchandising and in-door procurement of structural building materials was better at Lowe's than either Home Depot or Menards, in this researcher's opinion. Adjacent displays for selling and finding related needed items to accompany the main purchase category was best at Lowe's, worse at Home Depot. The self serve yard at Menards for lumber and structural building materials is cumbersome, and the layout continues to be confusing.

3) When it came to designing decks and supplying material lists to consumers, there seemed to be less help at Menards, but the process at all 3 retailers was cumbersome, even with deck designing software - used directly by consumers and / or provided by in-store personnel. In this researcher's opinion, the notion of folks making appointments to design decks or leaving construction lists behind and only being given a lump-sum price annoys potential customers.

4) In the cabinetry area, Home Depot and Lowe's are similar in help and understanding of the customer's needs, however Home Depot seems to answer direct technical questions and understand lay out and design slightly better than Lowe's. Menards in this category seems to lag, both from an assortment and a "friendly, we can help you" position. Few designers were familiar with formaldehyde off gassing specifically as it related to their lines of cabinetry.

5) The most knowledgeable sales associates for doors and windows are at Menards, then Lowe's, then Home Depot. Many technical questions were incorrectly answered by all three retailers at every store visited. Fenestration is an area where all three could use some training. Only in-stock or displayed items were tested in this category.

As part of this series, the shops will continue into the future, with sporadic articles as they become available in all departments of all three Big Box retailers. The opinions expressed in this article are the author's opinions only and should not be construed as an endorsement of any retailer.

electric guitar

It has been shown that electric fireplaces are fast replacing traditional wood or gas burning fireplaces. Basically, an electric powered fireplace simulates the flames and sounds of a traditional fireplace. This type of fireplace is a good alternative for fuel fireplace that have no installation, maintenance and emission issues. As a matter of fact, the only thing that you have to do with this fireplace is to buy one from a home depot and then plug it in a standard volt receptacle.

The simulated fires commonly set the stage for faux logs, grates and glass doors, while some models have glowing ember beds. Likewise, there are also models that contain stone fireplace surrounds, while others have surrounds that are made out of raw and sometimes precious materials.Such dramatic presentation simply implies that modern fireplace designs are made in order to make any space appear more aesthetically appealing.

Supermarket Brands Are In Real Trouble

Why Don't Supermarkets Have Brands?

lowes appliances

It may come as a surprise to the category of supermarket chains to learn that almost to a fault, none of them owns a brand. They think they do, but they do not. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. The only reason to invest in the building and maintaining of a brand is to increase your preference or increase your margins. Against that acid test, supermarket chains come up sucking hind teat.

LOWES

There are a few major exceptions, and we will disclose them as we proceed, but the battle for supremacy in the supermarket gambit has come down to location, location, location. Look around at your own neighborhoods and you will quickly see the reality of the situation. Supermarkets, like their poor stepsisters the pharmacy chains, are in a rush to build more and more stores. They realize that in order to dominate a local market, they need to be the closest purveyor to the shopper's home. That is not exactly the pure definition of a brand is it?

The Business Model Tells the Story

They recognize this fact in their bones which is why their business model has them scampering to build new stores as close as possible to developing residential areas. Yet, they pretend to themselves (and their stockholders) that they have a brand. To Harris Teeter, ACME Markets, Lowes Foods, A&P, Pathmark, PUBLIX, GIANT, Win-Dixie and the Piggly Wigglies of the word I have a short and pointed warning... Watch Out! Wegmans is coming!

Harris Teeter, for example, believes they have a brand. They believe they are "the upscale choice" but deep down they recognize the fallacy in that claim as they build more and more stores in more and more neighborhoods. They realize that their brand is not a destination, and that aside from the "brand" of habit, shoppers will not ride by a competitor's store on a regular basis to shop at a Harris Teeter. They know that their store does not represent a "destination" -- there is no sense of arrival, no sense of specialness and therefore no REAL brand.

Wegmans is a Juggernaut

What makes Wegmans so formidable? They learned their brand lessons well and are playing brand hardball. Borrowing on the specialty marketers like Whole Foods, Fresh Market and Bread & Circus, and the upscale brands of Four Seasons and Ritz Carleton, they recognized that brands that differentiated the customer enabled these brands to become destinations. They became a magnet for those seeking specialness, specialty, high quality foods, and experience -- within a geographic area. When the shopper believed they were a more discriminating shopper(what we call a Brandface),these shoppers were willing to inconvenience themselves by traveling a greater distance to satiate that self-identifying need. They would also be willing to pay higher costs for that same self-identification.

Remember that brand, the kind of brand that makes a category player a destination, is not a description of the store, it is the self-description of the customer -- who they believe they are. The greater the store's ability to satiate that self-description, the more powerful the brand. Does the Harris Teeter or Publix shopper believe they "have arrived" when they shop? Do they see themselves as smarter, mores discerning and erudite? Not according to Harris Teeter or they would not need to build a new market every 1.8 miles!

Think Differently

Wegmans took the lessons from Fresh Market and Starbucks and recognized that the modern grocery shopper wanted to have an experience when they shopped. They believed that shoppers wanted to have access to and be surrounded by "the world of fine choices" even when they were simply shopping for Campbell's Soup. The baby boomers, Gen-x and Gen-y customers believe the shopping experience should be as entertaining as utilitarian and that the yearning fordiscovery was woven into the fabric of their being.

Does it cost more to create a Wegmans than it does a Lowes Foods? You bet it does. It requires an investment in brand, brand management, architecture, interior design, customer anthropology, and world-class buyers. However, these costs are dwarfed by the short term solution of the escalating construction costs of duplicating sores in repeated markets within saturated residential areas.

The Category's Problem

Why then, is the supermarket category so stale and delinquent in its own space? It is not because they lack talented people or smart planners. It is because they have bought into an old and stale idea of brand. They have come to believe that they can differentiate themselves from the competitive set by restating generic category descriptions like fresh, quality, selection and fair prices. They think they can OWN a position that is the providence of the entire category... like, "the beef people."

Where is the Future?

What does this mean for the future of the category? It means the stakes are being raised because the category is demanding more. The real problem for the major players can be found in the existing store space. The sooner they invest in their brands, the better for their shareholders because an investment in today will ultimately cost less than a forced investment tomorrow. Experience and discovery has as its table stakes; larger more open square footage, broader specialty departments, and an understanding of the preceptive fabric of the target audience. This means existing store locations may be inadequate in the future.

Bigger is not necessarily better, it is only better when bigger incorporates entertainment, discovery and experience. These are the hallmark of the busy and demanding shopper of today, as well as the shopper of tomorrow. Will a Starbucks coffee bar differentiate your brand? Not on your life. Instead of adding a Starbucks coffee bar to your &

Your Electric Bill - Your Price to Compare Can Mean Savings!

Everyone wants to save money these days. Take some time to examine your monthly household bills. For example, look closely at your monthly electric bill. You may be able to save money by buying your electricity from a supplier other than your utility for a substantial savings.

electric bicycle

Your electric bill is actually a composite of many charges associated with delivering electricity to your house. To simplify -- you can lump all charges into three categories:

ELECTRIC

Supply charge. The electricity delivered to your house is either generated by your utility, purchased by your utility from another company, or is a combination of both internally generated and purchased electricity. That is your supply charge. Somewhere on your bill is your "price to compare" -- given in cents per kilowatt-hour of electricity. It is the rate you are being charged just for electricity -- sometimes referred to as "commodity charge." Multiply your "price to compare" times the number of kilowatt-hours of electricity you use to determine your supply charge. Fixed charges. Every month your utility charges you a fixed amount for being a customer. This amount does not vary depending on the amount of electricity you use. It covers the utility's costs of maintaining you as customer, even if you used "zero" electricity. Your state may also impose a fixed tax on your bill, regardless of the amount of power you use. Variable charges. All other charges on your bill vary depending upon how much electricity you use. For example, take your electric transmission and delivery charges. Your bill calculates this charge for you by multiplying the kilowatt-hours you used by the rate for electric transmission and delivery. Other charges are computed in the same way.

Here's how you can save on your supply charge

Call your electric utility and ask if they offer supply choice. If they do, ask for a list of alternate suppliers and their rates that you can compare with your own utility's "price to compare."

You may find that you are already getting the best deal. Or perhaps the savings will be so little that it's not worth your while to contract with an alternate supplier.

If you do find that your savings justify switching to an alternative supplier, you'll have to contact that supplier in order to sign up. Read the terms of the contract carefully. How long will the supplier guarantee this rate? What happens at the end of the contract period? If everything looks o.k. and your potential saving looks good, go ahead and sign up and save!
